As the weather gets colder, I am trying to have as many get-togethers in my back yard as possible before I have to pack it up for the winter. It’s just such a great entertaining space! So as you could imagine, when the idea of a hot dog party came up, I jumped at the chance. My idea for this party was a make your own hot dog and sausage bar, complete with over 30 topping options for all my friends to let their hot dog imaginations run wild.
I thought I would write a guide to help other people host their own party with a build your own hot dog bar. If you have other fun ideas to add, make sure you pop them into the comments!
Buns Are Important Too!

It’s easy to get caught up with all the topping ideas and forget about the foundation of a good hot dog – the bun! Pictured above are a brioche bun, a split top bun, and a classic bun. If you are also using some larger sausages, make sure you get big enough buns or even sub rolls to support the sausage size. You could have a variety, or choose your favorite and go all-in. Don’t forget gluten free options if some of your guests have dietary restrictions!
To toast or not to toast?
Obviously a bun that has been beautifully griddled with butter is the best choice for a hot dog, but sometimes if you are feeding lots of people it can be a hassle to get them all toasted. My advice is to brush them all with butter and toss them on the grill ahead of time, then put them all out on a platter. A well toasted bun retains it’s quality for a while.
A Variety Of Hot Dogs and Sausages

I think it’s fun to have a few types of hot dogs and sausages available instead of just grabbing one standard option. Check out a local butcher for some really great dogs, or just go wild in the sausage section of your store. Make sure to have a few flavored options. I like anything with cheese and jalapeno!
All the toppings for a build your own hot dog party!

I personally like to go crazy with the toppings and have as many options as possible. I usually go to the store for a bunch, then literally just open up my fridge and pantry and start looking around for anything that can possibly go on a hot dog!

This was the epic topping bar at my last party. So many options! It was really fun seeing what combos everyone came up with.
