Italian Sub Burger
A cheese burger is tucked inside an Italian sub with all the meats and toppings! Recipe Sponsored by BUBBA Burger
The inspiration for this recipe
For the past several months, my feeds have been inundated with Italian Sandwiches. It’s hard enough for me to not crave an Italian sub under ordinary circumstances, but when I have to also look at them all day, forget it!
I thought it would be fun to do a burger-Italian sub mash-up for my next recipe with BUBBA Burger. Putting a juicy delicious BUBBA Burger on a sub roll with all the cured meats in a win already, but when you add the fresh veggies, oil and vinegar, and banana peppers, it’s next level!
Build the Italian sub first
First I scooped out a bunch of the bread from the inside of the roll. Then add olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and oregano. Then finally, some provolone and the meat. I like mortadella, salami, and capicola.

Make the burger next
Get that burger cooking while you load up the other ingredients. Make sure you season the burger well so you can still taste it among the flavorful Italian sub ingredients! I also topped it with more provolone.

Toppings for the Italian Sub Burger
Most of the year I use roasted red peppers in my Italian subs, but it is tomato season right now, so a beautiful heirloom goes right on top of the burger. Add some banana peppers and lettuce and you are good to go. The last very important step is to wrap the burger in parchment paper like you just got it fresh from the deli. This will tighten things up and make it easier to eat.

Then when you slice it in half, you get that beautiful cross section.

So much flavor! These two sandwiches fit perfectly together as one. The Italian meats taste right at home as a burger topping, and honestly it’s not that different than some bacon.

Twists on this recipe
You could serve this on a bun instead of as a sub sandwich. I would just use all the Italian sub ingredients as toppings, and drizzle on some oil and vinegar.

Italian Sub Burger
Ingredients
- 1 loaf Italian bread
- olive oil and balsamic vinegar
- dried oregano
- 2 BUBBA Burgers
- 4 slices provolone cheese
- 6 slices mortadella
- 6 slices salami
- 6 slices capacola
- 2 slices tomato
- banana peppers
- shredded romaine
Instructions
- Cut the bread so that you have two burger bun sized pieces. Slice almost in half to form the hinge of the bread. Rip out a bunch of the bread from the center to allow more space for the fillings.
- Drizzle the inside of the bread with some oil and vinegar, and sprinkle on some oregano.
- Preheat a pan or the grill to medium heat with a little oil, and add in the burgers. Cook until you see the juices pooling on top of the burgers, about 8 minutes. Flip and add cheese, cook another 5-8 minutes until cooked through. Add 1 slice of provolone to the top of each burger where there are 2 minutes left of cooking.
- Add the other slice of cheese to the bottom half of the bread. Then add the meats, starting at the top edge of the bread, and spreading down paste the hinge end and half way across the bottom half of the bread.
- Add the burgers to the side of the bread that has the cheese and only is half covered with meat. Top the burger with tomato, banana peppers, and lettuce. Drizzle on more oil and vinegar.
- Tightly wrap the bread around the burger and veggies. Wrap the sandwich with parchment paper tightly. Seal and allow to sit for 5 minutes before serving.
