Hot Dog Pizza Sandwich

Neapolitan style pizza crust is the perfect sandwich bread for this hot dog! It’s crisp and soft in all the right places. Not only that, but burrata and jalapeno make incredible hot dog toppings! I might have to use them all the time now! Combine that with mustard and relish and every bite of this hot dog is perfection.
The inspiration for this recipe
If you haven’t seen the pizza sandwich, it went viral a year or two ago, and has a pizza crust as the bread, and mortadella, burrata, and pistachio as the filling. Turns out the crust is great for other sandwiches too! I am very hot dog focused right now, so I obviously decided I should use it as a hot dog bun.
Make the dough
I always use How to Pizza as a guide for making my dough. That recipe is for NY Style pizza though. But I just added a little water to it to make it act and feel more like Neapolitan style. It isn’t true Neapolitan, but it worked for me in this case. After the dough rests in the fridge for a few days, form 6 inch rounds with it that will be a perfect size as sandwich rounds for these hot dogs.

Baking the dough
I cooked the dough at 820 for about 3 minutes. I put some notes about ovens and temps and dough options down by the recipe if you have questions! Brush the dough with oil, then fold it in half and brush more oil on top. The reason I placed this on the very edge of my peel was so it wouldn’t stick. The oil can cause it to stick so this way I could put the edge on the pizza stone and let it pull right off.

This takes no time at all in the super hot oven!

Make the hot dog pizza sandwich
After the dough cools a bit, open it up and add the fillings

Burrata first, then jalapeno.

Then add the hot dog, some relish, and mustard! You could honestly add whatever you like on this but I thought the burrata and jalapeno went so well with the hot dog!

Serve the hot dog pizza sandwich
Time to dig in! I was obsessed with how these came out!

Such a treat, so many flavors and textures in evry bite!

Twists and tips on this recipe
I mentioned I used How to Pizza for this hot dog pizza sandwich, but made the dough wetter and cooked it at 820. You can follow my recipe here if you want, or you can use the calculator on that page to create however many 6 inch rounds you want. If you use that page, it would be perfectly fine to cook it in your regular oven at home as high as it will go. Alternatively you could follow this recipe.
Feel free to top this however you want, but I did think my combo of flavors was pretty much perfect.

Hot Dog Pizza Sandwich
Equipment
Ingredients
Dough
- 135 grams ap flour
- 3 grams salt
- 0.3 grams yeast
- 1 gram sugar
- 100 grams cold water
Dogs
- 4 hot dogs
- 2 jalapenos sliced thin
- 2 balls burrata
- mustard
- relish
Instructions
Dough
- Mix the dough ingredients in a bowl. You can use your hands or a stand mixer. Knead about 15-20 minutes until the dough is smooth and stretchy. If you use your hands, it will be a pretty sticky dough. If it sticks too much, pause kneading for about 10 minutes and cover with a paper towel or upside down bowl.
- Split the dough into 4 pieces. Prepare 4 containers, small bowls or tupperware, with oil. Roll the dough into a perfect ball, then add it to a container and coat with oil. Cover. Repeat with all the dough balls. Put them into the fridge to slowly ferment for 2 days.
Cook
- Take the dough out about an hour before you are ready to cook. Place on a floured work surface upside down from how they were in the fridge. Lightly coat on all sides with flour and let sit for an hour.
- Preheat the pizza oven to 800. Check my notes above the recipe for using a regular oven VS pizza oven.
- Stretch a dough ball into a perfect 6 inch round, making sure the edges are thicker to form what looks like a bubbly crust. Put it at the very edge of a pizza peel so it is slightly hanging off.
- Brush the top of the dough liberally with oil. Fold it in half, then brush the top with more oil.
- Slide into the oven and cook abou 3-4 minutes until charred on the edges. Repeat with all 4 doughs.
- Cook the hot dogs on a grill or in a frying pan to your desired char level
- Open the dough and spread half a burrata ball across the bottom by the seam. Top with jalapeno, then add the hot dog. Top with relish and mustard, or your favorite hot dog or pizza toppings. Serve!
