McDonald’s Steak Egg and Cheese Bagel Recipe

Steak egg and cheese bagel

Fast food is a touchy subject in the food blog world. People love to hate it. The mere mention of a fast food joint on most food blogs causes 50 comment wars about corporations and global warming and McDonalds being the root of all evil. Such hostility! Well guess what folks, I partake in the occasional fast food indulgence and I am NOT afraid to say it! Sometimes, you just crave a dollar double cheeseburger or a cheesy crunchy gordita. There are a lot of commercials for fast food, and when its late night here in Bermuda and one comes on the screen, it’s hard to handle since there is no fast food on the island! One of the things I crave most, is McDonalds breakfast, it’s a must when I am off the island. I recently tried to recreate a McDonalds steak egg and cheese bagel and have had near perfect results. I thought this would be a great recipe to share for all those college kids out there who love a hung-over McDonald’s breakfast but rarely make that 10:30 AM cutoff!!

Whatever onions are fine, today we had red. You can’t leave out the onions though!! They are very important. Pay attention kid.
Don’t make them too small or they will melt away.
Is this really happening? Is this a picture on TFIMB? Or some other crappy food blog that takes a lot of shortcuts? Nope kids, you aren’t still feeling effects from those purple things you ate last night, you need these to make this re-creation taste on point. NEVER NEVER use these for a cheesesteak!!!! Please! This is the only thing you should ever use these for! I think the name for these came about when the first person tasted them. The scientists at the company blindfolded a bunch of taste testers and handed them their new product on a plate. At first bite they all said “ummmm…steak?

Butter is key to this recipe if you want it to taste like the real thing. Don’t give up! I know there is probably a Project Runway marathon on, or you are syncing up Samurai Jack to Second Stage Turbine Blade, but you are losing focus here.

Salt, butter, onions and a half tsp of sugar.

Brown them up nice.

5 “servings” of the “steak” should do for 2 sandwiches.

3 eggs.

Toast the bagel

When the “steak” is done, dry it out.

Dry it pretty well.

Melt some cheese on the bagels after they get toasted. Cheddar.

MMMM. I know you like cheese toast, but your almost there! Keep it up. You are going to need the energy from this sandwich to play frisbee on the quad later.

Cook the eggs like an omelet that you never fold, just flip it once.

Fold it over like they do at mc d’s

To impress people even more, wrap it in parchment paper and draw a McDonalds logo on the top.

Just like the real thing!

Hmmm maybe it is those purple things…
-EDIT
There is no recipe here because I wrote this post when I was 25 and didn’t care about recipes back then! I may revisit this one day and add a true recipe, but for now, use the weird pictures as a guide and follow your heart and you will be just fine. Also check out the comments below for a good fight, people can’t agree on weather it is creamy dill mustard or hollandaise on the sandwich.

  1. Wow, is that what McD’s really looks and tastes like? What was I thinking sticking to the egg mcmuffin all these years? No wonder I never crave McDonalds haha!

  2. Far out that looks fantastic! I love junk food from time to time. Life is meant to be enjoyed right? No time for snobbery 🙂

  3. Wow….all this time I’m not alone in my addiction to this McDonald’s breakfast menu item. When I mention the S,E,& C Bagel to ANYBODY…they never know what I’m talking about. I would almost kill for this sandwich…and I think I’ve talked myself into going and getting one right now. I have noticed that many McDonald’s don’t have this item on the menu and I really can’t understand why. I’m scared that the McDonalds where I live is going to stop selling them. I noticed on the recipe above you used Cheddar cheese but in the McDonald’s nutritional information it lists American cheese as the ingredient. I think the sauce they put on it is what I like the most…I thought I would include their EXACT ingredients for anyone who wants to attempt making one:
    Ingredients:
    Bagel
    Prepared with Liquid Margarine
    **************************************************************************************************************
Breakfast Steak (which includes: Beef, water, salt, sodium phosphate, BHA, TBHQ, citric acid)
    **************************************************************************************************************
    Folded Egg
    **************************************************************************************************************
    Pasteurized Process American Cheese
    **************************************************************************************************************
    Slivered Onions
    **************************************************************************************************************
Breakfast Sauce (I figure there’s too much chemistry here to replicate at home)
Soybean oil, water, egg yolk, whole egg, egg white, distilled vinegar, contains 2% or less of the following: salt, corn syrup solids, lemon juice concentrate, sugar, food starch-modified, natural (dairy and vegetable source) and artificial flavors, spices, propylene glycol alginate, preservatives (potassium sorbate, sodium benzoate, calcium disodium EDTA), dehydrated swiss cheese (milk, cheese cultures, salt, enzymes), buttermilk powder, xanthan gum, extractives of turmeric (color), disodium guanylate, disodium inosinate, soy lecithin.
    **************************************************************************************************************
Liquid Margarine (I’m assuming EVERYTHING in this sandwich is prepared with copious amounts of “liquid margarine”!!)
    **************************************************************************************************************
    Steak Grilled Seasoning
Salt, spices, garlic, partially hydrogenated soybean oil, natural flavor (vegetable source).

  4. Sorry to comment on a 8 month old post but I just had to. Basically the “breakfast sauce” is a form of hollandaise made of chemicals instead of eggs, butter, lemon juice and salt&pepper. At least that’s what I think they were going for, kinda salty, sweet and peppery with a tang. To me it doesn’t add much to the sandwich with the small amount they put on the bagel.

  5. awsome recipe, thanks! every mornin the girl at the counter knows that when i come in, i want two SEC sandwiches. i read the usa today, and shut off my phone. sitting there, and savoring those two sandwiches makes my mornin. glad i’m not alone! gettin hungry, now!

  6. THANK YOU!!! I have moved to the west coast and they don’t exist out here. They were always my favorite and now that I’m pregnant, well…I’ve been dreaming about them. You may have saved lives by posting this. 🙂 thanks again!!!!

  7. Oh god. That is probably the best sandwich in the history of the world. My friends refuse to try it, since they’re into pancakes and whatnot. But man oh man, my mouth is watering for one right now. I’m going to make one!:)

  8. This was the best sandwich on the menu…not anymore. Ordered one this morning…they changed the meat…it looks like cheap roast beef now. No more juicy meat…no more grease…the health nuts in the world are killing me…

  9. I think the quality of the sandwich depends on where you get them, cause the one I got about 2 weeks ago was still greasy and wonderful. And I think the sauce does really make the sandwich, that and the onions ^_^

  10. Hi, Was looking for the calorie count for SECB and came across your blog… if you can buy McCormick Montreal Steak Seasoning, it will make your SECB almost exactly like the seasoning they use here (Midwest)… that seasoning is the best, on baked potatoes, on anything you like… wow! So surprised no fast food on your island.
Never responded to a blog before, but your’s was so fun I just had to tell you about the ”secret” seasoning!!!
    :):):)

  11. I have been making similar steak sandwiches for years but instead I use top round. If you have a meat cutter (butcher shop) in your local area (some of the large supermarkets also have them now) ask them to cut you some thin slices of top round roast for sandwich steaks. I fry them up in a skillet in butter, just awsome, you’ll never use Steakum’s again.

  12. One MAJOR thing that your missing son! I worked at mcdonalds when I was 16 and 17 and these bagels are one thing I perfection! You left out the hollandaise sauce! That’s like seriously half the flavor! Mix 4 egg yolks, juice from one whole lemon, pinch of salt, pinch of cayenne and 1 stick of butter, Vigorously whisk the egg yolks and lemon juice together in a stainless steel bowl and until the mixture is thickened and doubled in volume. Place the bowl over a saucepan containing barely simmering water (or use a double boiler,) the water should not touch the bottom of the bowl. Continue to whisk rapidly. Be careful not to let the eggs get too hot or they will scramble. Slowly drizzle in the melted butter and continue to whisk until the sauce is thickened and doubled in volume. Remove from heat, whisk in cayenne and salt. Cover and place in a warm spot until ready to use for the eggs benedict. If the sauce gets too thick, whisk in a few drops of warm water before serving. Put it on after you toast the bagels like you would butter the bagel! ENJOY! Promise you that it will be exactly like good ole mc f-in donalds!

  13. i make something v similar only instead of steak (which is v diff to get in India) i usually use airdried fatty austrian sausage ….. and u said it …. once in a while a man craves a fast food fix and why ever not! enjoy.

  14. I just tried making this, it didn’t taste at all like a s.e.c from mcdonalds.. I think it’s the meat though (kinda tasted like rubber) but maybe I just suck at cooking.

  15. Thank you!!!
Just recreated this recipe with a few twists, it’s amazing! Didn’t have that addicting effect like the mcdonalds version, but I think that’s because they put actual drugs in it.
So I used regular onions, thin slices of left over roast beef, an abnormal amount of sugar, salt and butter, sprinkled some course cracked black pepper and dill seeds with the beef/onion stir fry, switched up the american cheese for colby/monterey jack slices, threw in some sugar and chopped scallions into my eggs since I was low on onion (more is more!) and what made my day: the ghetto hollandaise sauce mentioned in the comments above by “ea”!!! I used half mayo, half grey poupon, dash of cumin, garlic powder and a few more dill seeds. The mcdonalds in NYC don’t use this sauce (anymore?), the bagels have become smaller and emphasis is on the steak seasoning, but pepper and dill captures the flavor.
Again, not a carbon copy, but it satisfies that craving without a doubt. Some might find it even better! (i probably would too if I didn’t have to actually use up energy to make it myself. And that’s why we love fast food.)

  16. The Steak-part is cooked at McD’s with whole coriander seed, rough crushed black pepper and some crushed garlic. Add that as you cook the steak and it will be gooder yet!

  17. I used to do the overnight at a mcdonalds so I had to make breakfast during turn over. The sauce is a hollandaise sauce. And the “steak seasoning” is nothing more than McComicks Montreal Steak Seasoning. It even comes in a great big box with the McCormicks logo on it.

  18. Since the MCd one basically sucks (some kind of greasy chopped beef sausage), I’d say this one looks better–though the MCd one has some kind of bbq sauce on it. Also, to think that any fast food version is the ‘standard’, or the ‘real thing’ is nonsense. You can ALWAYS cook better at home.

  19. our MCD use’s a 1/8 to 1/4″ rib eye steak FOR THIS SANDWICH. NOT SURE HOW IT WOULD TASTE WITH STEAK UM’S????

  20. dude i feel ur pain but i must know were did u find steak-ums out west i cant find them in oregon anywhere plz help

  21. the steak egg and cheese bagel recipe from McDonalds was great only one thing they put some kind of sauce on it because when I order this I get xtra sauce and the website has nothing about it or how to make it

          1. I really wanna know where anyone has gotten hollandaise sauce that tastes like that? I love hollandaise… I make my own, I have eaten it at restaurants, what others have made… even made the shitty powdered stuff… McDonald’s breakfast sauce is no way shape or form a hollandaise Lol. McDonald’s once upon a time also had an eggs Benedict sandwich that they put hollandaise on… NOT the same sauce… at all.

    1. It’s simply just Creamy Dill Mustard mixed with some mayonnaise. It’s a weekend cheat food for me. Freakin delicious

    2. Its dill mustard and mayo. Omg it’s so good I have to make them my self cause arkansaw dont sale them.when I lived in texas I would get 2 on the the way to work 5 days a week. But since I make them they are just as s good

    3. Ok, you’re all correct in a way. It’s supposed to taste like hollandaise sauce but still be pretty much shelf stable. So, mayo (oil, eggs, and vingar) something to make it buttery (like that powdered butter stuff you buy for your popcorn), something to make it more eggy (or use Japanese mayo which uses only the yolk), and citric acid for that lemony taste while also being a preservative. All of these things can be sourced on Amazon and just about any multistate grocery chain store. It can be done!!! Have fun. 🙂

  22. To get the steak flavored exactly right, flavor it with the Montreal steak seasoning while cooking the steak. Thank me later!

  23. IVE READ MCCORMICK STEAK SEASONING IS CLOSE TO THE MCKY D ORIG. IF THATS YOUR AIM , FURTHER THE ORIG IS A GREASY MESS SO DRYING IT WELL IS ….AGAINST GOD AND NATURE….OTHERWISE WELL DONE

  24. I don’t think anyone got the sauce correct, it has a lot of garlic in and is simply delicious. I really would love to have the true sauce recipe.

  25. The sauce is definitely not mustard! I absolutely despise mustard and can taste it in anything! The sauce reminds me of Green Goodness dressing, I would start there and modify it as needed.

  26. Hollandaise is the official bagel sauce in this case, easy quick recp. Online all over. 😊😊😋😋👌👌

    1. It is indeed 2 dill mustard and mayo. may sound simple, but that is what it is. when they were available I compared the 2 side by side. I also now think Montreal steak seasoning for steak.(although I didn’t compare it wit original)

  27. For every one wanting to know about the sauce. Here it is. Also they use a garlic butter with the bagels.

Breakfast Sauce: Soybean oil, water, liquid egg yolk, liquid egg white, vinegar, salt, corn syrup solids, sugar,
modified corn starch, concentrated lemon juice, spice, natural (dairy and plant source) and artificial flavour, cheddar
cheese powder, buttermilk powder, whey powder, disodium inosinate, disodium guanylate, propylene glycol
alginate, sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate , xanthan gum, extractives of turmeric, butter oil, butter fat, natural
smoke flavour (plant source), calcium disodium EDTA. CONTAINS: EGG, MILK.

  28. Not close, sorry, Mcdonalds used a hollandaise sauce on their bagel, and the steak was a large solid piece not sliced. It was also white onion strips and the steak had a unique seasoning blend put on it.

    1. Completely wrong tim, not hollandaise, 1 part creamy dill 2 parts mayo. The steak is not ‘solid’ it’s pressed meat pieces, just formed. Like steak ‘ums… onions are a preference, like like it was mentioned.. McCormick steak seasoning is spot on.

  29. I’m on a low carb diet, so I made this as an omelette. I cooked the meat with Montreal Steak seasoning someone suggested and topped it with dill hollandaise sauce. SOOO GOOD!

  30. Ok, I did a reply to someone else on the breakfast sauce issue but this is an overall comment. I love meat choice some Montreal seasoning and you’re golden. You’re folded egg is a fantastic upgrade. The cheese… this is not a cheddar situation, get the deli sliced American cheese the color may be white but the taste is closer. Now, the onions!!! Which other than the breakfast sauce is the most important ingredient. These bad boys can only be cooked in bacon or sausage fat drippings. This is literally the only thing that actually requires some attention and cooking “I give a damn” at McD’s. (Notice I didn’t say skill here) you learn how to cook onions. Anyways, great job with this. I commented for Steak-umms hack!

  31. You forgot one VERY IMPORTANT step when cooking your steak, you MUST cook it with butter like Mcds if you want the real taste of their sandwich. If you miss that step you wobt get like theirs. I have tried cooking the steak with out the butter and you can’t get the great taste without it
