Squash Sauce Pizza with Sausage and Banana Peppers

Squash Sauce Pizza with Sausage and Banana Peppers

Some may say it is a little early for squash and pumpkin flavors, but I am ready to go. As for pumpkin beer or coffee, no thanks, but using squash in recipes this time of year just feels right. We can still eat tomatoes and corn for another week or so, but don’t be afraid of the fall flavors when they are brought on in a subtle but delicious way.

I made this pizza a few days ago that used squash as the sauce layer. I cooked the squash down with onion, garlic, milk, basil, and oregano, and then blended it smooth to make a great base for the pizza. For me, any pizza that combines banana peppers and sausage is gonna be a winner, and everything else just makes it better.

Some dough is fermenting on the counter top.  To know more about dough and pizza cooking, check out this post.
Cook the squash and onion until browned and tender.
Put it into a bowl and blend until smooth.  This is after adding the basil and oregano, and I mixed it with some milk.
Build the pizza with the squash first, then sausage, then cheese, then banana peppers.  Yum.
As I mentioned, banana peppers and sausage make an excellent pizza.  Adding the squash sauce in there just makes it all the more better.
I actually mixed some whole wheat flour into the dough because I thought the earthy flavors would go better with the toppings, and it was a great choice!
I hadn’t made homemade pizza in a bit, so I was really happy about how this came out.
