Potato Shots!
Crispy fried potatoes, filled with a vodka mashed potato mixture- Like jello shots, but made with tasty potatoes! Vodka is made from potatoes anyways, so mixing it with potatoes is basically like bringing it back for a family reunion.
The inspiration for this recipe
I posted these deviled egg shots on Instagram in december and they were wildly popular, so I thought it would be fun to make more foods into shots. A potato was the first easy choice. Because of my obsession with dehydrated potato flakes, I knew making super boozy potatoes would be easy! Making an edible container for the potato shots would be the harder part.
Cut the potatoes into shot glasses first
Get some small potatoes and cut the bottom off first so it can stand up straight. Then cut the top off and use a melon baller to pull out the insides. If you are reading this post about how to make alcoholic potatoes, I am going to assume you are familiar with the shape of a shot glass. Use that knowledge to shape the potato like a shot glass for your potato shots.

Soak the potatoes a bit in some cold water then dry them off. I was frying mine, so this step helps them get crispy.

Make the boozy potato mixture
Basically what we are doing here is making instant mashed potatoes with vodka instead of water. It’s a dream come true. Add some butter, milk, and seasonings too!

fry the potatoes for potato shots
I fried mine but if I was making this again I would probably just bake them. Or air fry. I did the double fry method, first cooking them in warm oil, then crisping them in hot oil. They came out great but with the skin and the weird shape I am not sure it was worth the effort off frying them.

Put the potato shots together
Right after cooking, dip the potatoes into a mixture of cajun seasoning and old bay. This will form the rim. Then pipe the vodka potatoes into each potato shot glass. These sentences are fun to write.

Serve thee potato shots
I served them with lime on the side and sprinkled some more old bay and cajun on top!

Make sure you keep in mind that these are SHOTS. they are strong and have about 1/2 shot of vodka in each bite.

Twists on this recipe
I mentioned that I would probably bake or air fry the potatoes next time, and put that instruction in the recipe below but I haven’t tested it (yet) so proceed at your own risk.
You could definitely do these with gin or tequila or rum, but the potato on potato nature of the vodka. These are the potato flakes I always use. If you want to use another brand you can but I would do unflavored. I guess you could do a flavored one instead if you want to save some steps!

Potato Shots!
Equipment
Ingredients
- 12 small potatoes
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 cup dehydrated potato flakes
- 1 cup vodka
- 1 tablespoon worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon hot sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon old bay
- oil for frying (if frying)
- old bay and cajun seasoning for potato rims
Instructions
- Cut the potatoes into shot glasses – cut off the bottom off the potato so it can stand up straight. Cut a larger bit off the top and use a melon baller to remove the middle to form the shot glass shape.
- Soak the cut potatoes in ice water for 1 hour
- Meanwhile, mix the butter and milk in a bowl and microwave until the butter is melted and the milk is warm. Mix this with the potato flakes. Once combined, stir in the vodka, worcestershire, hot sauce, and old bay. Set aside, covered, to combine. It will thicken as it rests.
- If you are baking the potatoes, dry them off, toss with some oil, then line them on a baking sheet. Preheat the oven to 400. Roast until the edges are browned and the potatoes are cooked throuigh, about 45 minutes.
- If you are frying them, preheat the oil to 325. Dry the potatoes and fry for about 5 minutes. Remove from the oil and turn the heat up to make the oil 375. Fry again for 3 minutes until browned and crispy.
- Mix equal parts cajun seasoning and old bay on a plate. After the potatoes are ready, dip them in the seasoning to form the rim.
- Check on the potatoes. If they are not thick enough you can add some more flakes and let it sit more to thicken.
- Put the boozy potatoes into a piping bag and squeeze them into the potatoes. Sprinkle with more old bay and/or cajun and serve.
