Tart Cherry Pie

Cherry Pie

I’m sure you guys knew I was going to bookend cherry week with pie recipes. Besides, any self respecting fruit week should end with a pie. I had never eaten cherry pie before this weekend, but it has really been on my mind for the past few months. That’s because I recently discovered one of the best TV shows I have ever seen. Its called “Twin Peaks” and was on in 1990 and 91. I watched it on DVD a few months ago and I highly recommend it to anyone! It’s on netflix too. Anyways, the main character, Agent Cooper, Loves cherry pie and eats it all the time at the Double R Diner. I wonder if my pie is as good as Norma’s? I bet her mom, the food critic from Seattle would think so.

Whoever said happiness is a bowl of cherries never had to pit them all!!! this took me about an hour.

When you pit cherries for an hour you start to get loopy.

I also used some sweet cherries from the store to balance the flavors. Mostly my sour cherries though.

Great and simple pie crust recipe. The link is below.

Cutting for the lattice top. My log wants to tell you something.

The filling was mostly sour cherries, some sweet ones, sugar, vanilla, and corn starch.

This reminds me of when Bobby Briggs was behind bars barking like a dog. Freak.ย  Is that a stretch?ย  How about it reminds me of the creepy zig zag floor from coopers dream?

Do you guys know how to do a lattice top? It’s pretty easy.

Perfection.

Harry, I’m going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don’t plan it, don’t wait for it, just let it happen.

The pie really was awesome, better than I expected cause normally I am not a “Pie Guy”.

Tart, sweet, lots of vanilla.

This is why you leave the cherries as intact as you can. It looks awesome!

R.I.P. Laura Palmer!

I made this pie crust and it lived up to its name.

Tart Cherry Pie

Sour cherry pie with fresh picked cherries and homemade crust.

Ingredients

  • 7 Cup Sour Cherries
  • 1 Cup Sweet Cherries
  • 1 Teaspoon Fresh Lemon Juice
  • 1.5 Tablespoons Vanilla Extract
  • 1.75 Cups Sugar
  • 5 Tablespoons Cornstarch
  • Pie Crust Recipe linked above

Instructions

  • I used 7 (7!!!) cups of pitted sour cherries. be careful to keep them in tact cause they look nice in the final product as whole cherries. I mixed this with 1 cup of sweet supermarket cherries, diced well so they would be spread throughout. Squeeze of lemon (like a teaspoon), 1 and a half tablespoons vanilla, 1 and 3/4 cups of sugar (my cherries were really sour), and 5 tablespoons cornstarch. Simple! Mix and let it sit in the fridge while you make the pie crust. (crust linked above)
  • lattice it up, and bake 425 for 10 minutes, 375 for about 40 more. Let cool and enjoy with some icecream.

  1. EVERY week should end with pie. And in my opinion, sour cherry pie is ten times better than sweet cherry pie. But my favorite’s gooseberry, so I’m obviously biased.

  2. I had also never had cherry pie. Although growing up, apple pie was made fresh almost weekly, and at the time I hated it. This pie was wonderful. The crust, the cherries. I never expected it to be so good. Nice work Dan.

  3. At first I couldn’t believe you didn’t watch Twin Peaks…but then I remembered your age. Which made me remember mine. Now I need some cherry pie. Looks fantastic.
