Tamarind Soda

A homemade refreshing soda with fresh tamarind.

    Ingredients

    • 1 Box Tamarind Pods
    • Soda Water
    • Lime

    Instructions

    1. Open one box of tamarind pods. Crack the shells and place all the flesh into a bowl.  In a pot, heat up some water to a simmer. Pour the hot water over the tamarind only about half way up. Add 1/3 cup of brown sugar and a pinch of salt. Stir this mixture every few minutes for the course of an hour. Pour the mixture into a mesh strainer over a bowl to collect the water and press the tamarind pulp through the strainer to remove the strings and seeds. Pour the tamarind water and pulp into a blender and blend smooth. To a cup with ice, add a few spoonfuls of the tamarind mixture, a squeeze of lime, and fill with soda water. Stir well and serve! Refreshing!

    Notes

At work, we have these awesome tamarind sodas, but I’m watching what I eat right now, and they are insanely sugary and loaded with weird ingredients. I was craving one the other night, and instead of succumbing to the sugar demon, I decided to make my own with fresh ingredients and much less sugar.

Shell all the tamarind from one of thoes boxes. Mix the pulp with hot water, sugar, and a pinch of salt, and let it sit for an hour.

Press through a strainer to remove the pulp from the seeds.

Some of the pulp mixture in a cup with ice.

Lime and soda finishes it off. This drink is refreshing and delicious. I added a shot of vodka to mine!
