- 5 sheets lasagna
- 1 pound ground beef 80% lean
- salt and pepper
- 4 slices mozzarella cheese
- 2 slices provolone cheese
- 1/2 cup ricotta cheese
- 1 cup marinara sauce
Cook the pasta in a large pot of salted boiling water for about 10 minutes until tender. Remove from the water and cut in half.
Preheat a cast iron skillet to high heat. Split the meat into 4 equal balls. Flatten the ball slightly. Season the balls aggressively with salt and pepper.
Place a meatball onto the grill. Top with a slice of mozzarella. Then two pieces of the lasagna noodles that have been cut in half. Use a burger press to smash this as flat as you possibly can.
Cook about 3 minutes. You can start the next burger stack during this time. use provolone on the second one and the 4th one.
Scrape the burger off the griddle and flip it. Top with ricotta and tomato sauce. Cook 1 minute on this side and then transfer it to a baking sheet so that the lasagna noodles are still on the bottom.
Continue this process with all 4 balls of meat, stacking them on top of each other on the baking sheet.
Finally, top with the last two lasagna noodles, then add more sauce and ricotta, and the last two slices of mozzarella
Broil the lasagna stack on high heat to brown and melt the cheese on top.
Cut in half and serve.
I suggested earlier that this would be better with smashed meatballs instead of just smashed burgers. You can see my smashed meatball recipe here. I am sure I will revisit this recipe and update it with meatballs soon once I have time to test it.
