The Avant Gardener’s Salad


I wanna grow tomatoes on the front steps. Sunflowers, bean sprouts, sweet corn and radishes.
This is what Courtney Barnett is planning in her song Avant Gardener before her day takes a bad turn. I imagine that things got better and she was able to plant that garden eventually so the neighbors would stop thinking that they have a meth lab in the house. Then one day after the garden grew, she made this sweet salad with the harvest.

I’ve seen orange soda in ceviche before, so I thought that the sour effervescence of kombucha would be a welcome addition to a fresh fish ceviche on a hot night last week. I used GT’s “trilogy” kombucha for this recipe which is lemon, raspberry, and ginger, and pretty much one of the best things I have ever tasted. Some fresh peaches and a little bit of habanero helped bring everything together and make this a meal to remember.

Did you guys know that hummus makes an awesome alternative to pizza sauce? I used it on pizza at a recent pizza party, and a few people even called it the best pizza there! I decided not to get weird with the flavors like I did yesterday, instead I just topped the pizza with some of hummus’s best friends. Friends like feta, olives, kofta, and tzatziki.

While I was traveling I caught up on some food magazines that I had been neglecting when I was so busy. I really enjoyed busting through some Lucky Peach, Food and Wine, and Bon Appetite, and this dish is sort of a mashup of dishes I saw in all of the publications. As you can imagine, they were all summer themed issues, and this bean salad would go perfectly as a side on any BBQ spread.

Basically like something you might make at home the day after thanksgiving, this thing has everything you know and love about the flavors of the holiday. But instead of just tossing corn and cranberry sauce in there, we use our own fresh homemade corn and cranberry salsas to really make it unique. Today I’m gonna show you guys how to make the cranberry salsa, but why go through all this work when you can just come down to Belmont and try one?
