Hard Pretzels

I know I know, what happened to pie week? Well if you remember I announced Pie Week with the caveat of “If I get my act together this weekend”. While I did do a lot of cooking and had a very productive weekend, the last 2 pies got bumped! Expect pie week to finish in the second half of next week. Now on to the pretzels! I was going to meet some bloggers for brunch this weekend, and I noticed a call for pretzels on one of their websites. I had the ingredients on hand, and some time to kill, so I answered the call! I have made soft pretzels before, but these are the hard variety. Me and my roommate snacked on them all week! They actually went great with the homemade ranch I posted yesterday.

This recipe was easy, EXCEPT for rolling these all out.

A quick boil before they go into the oven.

Salted and brushed with egg yolk.

Browned beautifully!

These only photograph in cups. Any other way and they look awful.

I followed a recipe today. Alton Brown’s soft pretzels were so good, I knew I could trust the hard ones. The only change I made was that I had a nice salt blend lying around that had onion, garlic, pepper and lemon flavors in it. I used that salt instead of pretzel salt.

  1. Alton’s soft pretzels were indeed amazing so I’m definitely going to give these a try.
Also, not sure if it’s been brought to your attention, but the chrome browser has been flagging your site as containing malware on and off for the past month or so.

  2. Liz,
Thanks for the heads up! I actually had a malware issue a few weeks back, but I cleaned up the site and everything should be good now. I just double checked and I am not on the blacklist at the moment, so hopefully it is just that your browser is remembering the warning.

  3. As said “caller for homemade pretzels”, I can personally say that these were ahhhhmazing. I’d love to tell you that I was polite about it and had one or two a day but the bag was gone by Monday.
PS, I’m having issues accessing your site too..
