For the past few years, the big news in fair food has been the donut burger. You know, just a bacon cheeseburger with a glazed donut as the bun. This year, my good friend finally ate the donut burger and told me that it was nothing great. A few hours later he was walking by an unassuming stand for a local favorite burger shop called the White Hut. In the corner of their stand was a small sign advertising a double bacon cheeseburger that instead had waffles as the bun. He took the bait and decided that it was the best thing at the whole fair! I immediately made one at home after feeling left out.

I went to see tUnE-yArDs on Monday night with some friends, and as always we wanted to cook a meal that somehow related to the show we were heading to. Sometimes this is hard to do, but other times it seems to come naturally. Finding culinary inspiration in Merrill's lyrics seemed like it would be tough, but my sister knew what she wanted to make without hesitation. "How about something layered, because of all the vocal and instrument layering in the music?" From there we worked together to come up with this deep, colorful, and multi-flavored lasagna version of a timpano. If you are using words like deep, colorful, and multi-flavored to describe something inspired by tUnE-yArDs, you already know you got it right!
Since gnocchi are mostly potato, I had the idea to serve them with my favorite baked potato toppings. This dish came out amazing! It was one of the fattiest richest things I have cooked in awhile, complete with a bacon fat-butter-sour cream sauce, but it was worth every calorie. The possibilities are endless here, you could top these with whatever you like on your potato. I like mine with chili! The potato flavor really came through in the final dish and everything meshed really well together.
A couple months ago, I made a decadent meal with short ribs braised in a chile coffee sauce, and over the top mashed potatoes drenched in cream and butter. It was a comfort meal for me and some friends, not a regular occurrence, but a nice treat after a long week. About a month later, after the post bounced around the interwebs a bit, I received this email:
Did you read that title right? Yep, that is correct. Lets break it down. Cuban Sandwich: A panini of roasted pork, ham, swiss, pickles, and mustard. Some people get weird about a pickle in a melty cheesy sandwich, but trust me, so good. On to the next. Mac and cheese: you all know this one, and you know I know it very well. Today we are talking about the sauce part and not the mac part. Lasagna: Normally a tomato sauce, ricottaey amazingness. Today its just about the noodles, I wanted to layer the mac and cheese to emulate the pressed sandwich. I was gonna leave the lasagna part out of the title, but about 5 people told me I'm not allowed to use lasagna noodles in a mac and cheese, I had to call it lasagna. This was hard to name! I could have also called it cubanza, but now I'm just talking nonsense. In other news, THIS WAS SOOO GOOD! It could have to do with me planning it for like 2 months, but I just loved it. Everyone who tried it gave me the "really?", followed by "its a bit pickley" followed by "it's actually really good!" like they were surprised or something. When have I led you guys astray that you doubt me so?
I used to keep it a secret that I watched Gossip Girl. Now that I have been back in the US for awhile, I realized that people watch some really awful television, and that I should be proud of my one guilty pleasure. At least it isn't some crap reality TV game show. Remember that episode of Seinfeld where Jerry had to take the lie detector test about weather or not he watched Melrose Place? After it was out that he watched the show, he seemed to start to embrace it. Anyway, I wanted to make waffles to watch the finale of Gossip Girl with Steph, because the guy on the show is always talking about waffles for some weird reason. I didn't want normal breakfast waffles, and I started to think about how people like to eat it with fried chicken. Then I started thinking about using it as a sandwich bread and that's where this meal came from. Instead of fried chicken, I went with an easy bbq chicken flavored with a store bought sauce, and a simple slaw topping. I loved how it came out!
These weren't as crazy amazing(cramazing?) as they look and sound, but they were still very good. They definitely need a few tweaks though to become a perfect recipe. The main issue which I knew might be a problem from the start is that the cheese explodes out of the dough well before the dough is finished cooking. Not really a huge issue because the burnt cheese tastes great, but I have a few different ideas to make these a bit more awesome next time I make them. Until then though, these guys weren't too shabby at all. They got snatched up pretty fast the night I made them!
The theme of this week is do-overs, but you know Raaaaaaaandy doesn't steal jokes, he UPGRADES them! When I first made the timpano, I knew I would one day attack it again with a new level of intensity, and today I am proud to say that I did not hold back. The reason I made this is because when I first told nick I would be staying with him for a week, I asked if he had seen anything on the site he wanted me to make for him. Without hesitation, he immediately said "how about that pie thing that was filled with pasta?" I knew if I was going to make it again, it would have to be epic.
I had a really funny idea last week, and Mandi and I tried it out over the weekend. I think these would be a neat finger food to pass around at a party. The cool thing is you can make them way ahead of time, so it frees you up to just reheat at the party. I like the idea of foods that look fancy, but are really something that everyone is familiar with.
So you might be wondering what we could have possibly done with all those jello shots. We had a big party at our place this past Friday. The theme of the party was college, so the jello shots fit in well. Today and tommorows posts are also things from that party. I have been wanting to make a large burger for awhile. In this world dominated by mini cheeseburgers and sliders, a huge burger is my rebuttal. I recommend anyone to make this for a party. It was easier than making 5 normal sized burgers, and was somewhat of a showstopper when I unveiled it.
I was asleep the other night and woke up in a cold sweat. FRANKINBURGER!!!! This creature came to me in a dream and demanded to be made a reality. FRANKINBURGER!!! When asked the age-old question, the decision every man must make at a BBQ, there is a new answer. FRANKINBURGER!!!!! I really did come up with this in the middle of the night, but the next day I googled burgerdog and I did find that someone had already made one. Oh well, it's still a fun post. And it came out pretty good. Mandi was a disbeliever, but upon first bite she changed her mind. This tastes EXACTLY how you would think. Like taking a bite of a bacon cheeseburger, and a hot dog at the same time. FRANKINBURGER!!!!!! It's a hot dog dressed up like a burger for Halloween! FRANKINBURGER!!!!

Since the 1st Celtics playoff game vs. the Atlanta Hawks, there has been a feeding frenzy at my house. One of our regular group, who has been there for every game, could easily take on Kobayashi in a hot dog eating contest. Since the beginning of the playoffs, he's been talking about the chili and cheese corn dog fries that he saw on Phantom Gourmet. My promise was that they would happen when we made it to the finals.
