The last restaurant standing finale began with Raymond telling the final 2 couples that he would like to take them into his world. And believe me “it is a magical world”. He explains that the first thing he ever cooked was a disaster. He made Crêpe Suzette to try and impress his mom, but when he lit it on fire to flambé it, it exploded everywhere. He now wants the contestants to try and impress his mom as well by opening their restaurants for one night only in a town in France where Raymond grew up and where all his family live. He wants them to bring a little piece of Britain to France the way he brought France to Britain so long ago.
They walk into their respective restaurants very happy with the layouts. The first challenge everyone had was purchasing the food. Everyone seemed to know a bit of French, but were having trouble with specific food words. The twins even danced around to demonstrate free range chicken. Jeremy and Jane were having more trouble coming up with a menu. This caused the usual Jane crying scene while they tried to figure out their plans. They ended up going back to the store the next day to get the rest of their supplies while their staff sat around waiting for their return.
Service seemed to go pretty well despite a few hiccups on both sides. The twins ran out of some ingredients and Jeremy was getting food out really slowly. Other then that, everyone seemed very happy and Raymond’s family liked the food. Raymond’s mom had the first burger of her life and said it was very good. In the end, 53 were served at 8 in the country, and 59 at brown and green.
At judging, the general comments were that the twins were good under pressure and supported each other when in need. “There was a room full of happy French people.” On Jeremy and Jane’s side, the food was taking a really long time but “the chef saved himself” with the quality of the food. Raymond also mentioned that they are often frozen by fear and can’t work well under pressure.
Raymond asked the inspectors, who would you choose to work with? John said the twins, Sarah said Jeremy and Jane, and Lee said he was undecided.
In the end, Raymond chose Jeremy and Jane! I was really surprised because I liked the twins the whole time. I feel they were often shown in a better light by the editing. The arguments Raymond gave were very valid for choosing them. He said that the twins were great and really loved the experience but they would be more suited to a smaller café. It is true after seeing their food that he is right; they often make burgers and bruchetta and fish pies. He also said that Jeremy was the best cook in the competition and that they would have fared better on the show if they were less ambitious from the beginning with their restaurant concept.
